Grade 4 learned all about Africa from the textiles in their traditional Kente Cloth clothing to the infamous African Safari animals.
Students learned what each color represents in the Kente Cloth and selected the colors that best represent them. They learned how to weave and how to use patterns, shapes, and lines to design their Textiles.
Lastly they incorporated yarn into their weavings. We had so much fun learning about this beautiful continent.
Students began by drawing 2 cat silhouettes. We discussed how to create Zentangles using line patterns and how to create illusion designs. After students designed both cats they painted warm and cool checkered backgrounds. Lastly they mounted their cats on yellow paper and onto their checkered backgrounds. π»ππ½

This lesson comes from one of my amazing art teacher friends Cassie Stephens~ you can find more of her projects on her blog cassiestephens.blogspot.com
Took students outside to collect leaves. We then analyzed the leaves looking closely at the lines, shape, form, and color. Students then chose a leaf to draw.
Students learned about Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. Students learned about abstract art and how to express feelings through color, shapes and lines while listening to music for inspiration.
Students created a Kandinsky inspired painting using all elements of art in one composition.
Last students used yarn adding actual texture and emphasis to lines.
My first grade did an amazing job drawing their cats and adding geometric shapes in the background.
They developed skills in flow drawing which is an art technique developed by artycrafykids.com to encourage children to understand shapes and create them in a freer way.
Students were encouraged to discover a natural flow, bringing mindfulness to the creative process.
Students enhanced their drawing by adding personality and geometric shapes in the background.
Students experimented with a mixture of mediums.

This unit incorporated a variety of elements and principles of art. The students began learning about Value and how to shade from dark to light and vice verse.
I then taught them about form and how using value can transform a fruit from appearing flat to round. I did this with an apple, showing them how to look for shadows and light.
Students then begin sketching a still life fruit bowl. Once they finished I incorporated pointillism. Students then learned about Seurat and his pointillism paintings. I demonstrated how to create value and shading using pointillism. We then added value with color on the fruit.
Students divided their background into geometric shapes using Zentangles to fill in each shape. This was an intense unit but I am so proud of my students, their progress and their finished pieces. π¨β€οΈππππππ½πππ½

Grade 1 Monsters β€οΈ Colors: After reading the book we went over our primary and secondary colors. Students then became monsters π€and scribbled all over their paper using two primary colored markers to make a secondary color. They saw the magic β¨when they added water and painted over their scribbled paper. Once dried we used the secondary color oil pastels and applied βLinesβ. Then we made the two colored monsters that made the secondary color or βMagicβ happen. A great layered lesson to introduce colors and lines.
